This, my friends, is bang bang cauliflower!!
If you’ve ever been to Bonefish Grill, then you know what it is all about! The original appetizer uses shrimp, but we used cauliflower to get more veggies in our day. It’s also a great way to use up any extra cauliflower you’ve got in the fridge!
This delicious and crispy bang bang cauliflower is the perfect low-carb version that tastes just like the original! This healthy appetizer is great as party food or as a full meal!
The keto bang-bang sauce gives it the perfect kick and it’s so good you’d never guess it’s actually a low carb!
It’s pretty much perfect. And actually pretty easy to make at home!
I know sometimes frying foods can be intimidating, but my husband is a huge fan of frying. If you use a big enough pot, you’re less likely to make a mess.
And trust me, this is one dish you won’t want to miss!! Well worth the effort!!
What is Bang Bang Sauce?
Bang Bang Shrimp is a famous appetizer served at Bonefish Grill — it’s coated in a deliciously sweet and spicy sauce made with mayo and sweet chili. The first time I tried it I was in love!!
Just as the name implies, sweet chili sauce is loaded with sugar, so the original Bang Band Sauce is not quite keto friendly. However, we were able to whip up a spot on low carb copycat with just a few simple ingredients!
Bang Bang Cauliflower Ingredients

Crispy Cauliflower
- Fresh cauliflower — you’ll need half of a large head
- Vegetable oil — for frying
- Egg — one large egg
- Heavy cream — you may also use regular milk, or even non-dairy milk (no sugar added)
- Almond flour — or almond meal
- Parmesan cheese — finely grated
- Parsley, green onion, or cilantro — optional garnish
Keto Bang Bang Sauce
- Mayonnaise — Use full fat
- Chili paste — be sure to use one with no sugar added

- Sriracha
- Lime juice
Kitchen Tools Used
- Baking Tray with non-stick silcone baking mats
- Mixing Bowls
- Large pot or Dutch oven for frying
How to Fry Cauliflower:
First, fill a pot with cooking oil until it is about 1 ½ inches deep and place over heat. Prep your cauliflower while oil comes to temperature.
You’ll need two small bowls to bread the cauliflower:
- Add heavy cream (or milk) and egg to one bowl and whisk to combine.
- Add almond flour and parmesan to the second bowl and stir to mix.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a non-stick silicone baking mat.
Cut cauliflower into bite-size pieces. Dip each piece of cauliflower in egg wash until fully coated. Allow any excess egg to drip back into the bowl.
Roll each cauliflower piece in the breading mixture. Gently press into the coating to ensure that the breading sticks well to the cauliflower. Place on your prepared baking sheet until ready to fry.
When the oil is ready (350°F) place a few pieces of cauliflower into the pot. Take care to ensure that the cauliflower pieces are not touching. Turn as needed until all sides are golden brown.
Remove from oil and place on a paper towel-lined baking sheet to absorb any excess oil.
Repeat until all cauliflower is fried. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley, cilantro, or green onion.
To Make the Bang Bang Sauce:
Whisk together sauce ingredients until smooth. For a less spicy version, cut the sriracha amount in half.
Drizzle, dip, or toss your cauliflower in bang bang sauce. However you like it!

Can You Fry Frozen Cauliflower?
We used fresh cauliflower for this recipe because you don’t have to thaw it. However, frozen cauliflower works just fine too and really is only one extra step.
If starting with frozen cauliflower florets, you’ll need to thaw, rinse, and drain off excess water. You may want to also use a paper towel to gently press out any excess moisture (without smashing the cauliflower).
After that, proceed with the rest of the recipe as written.

Crispy Cauliflower
- 1/2 head Cauliflower chopped into bite sized pieces
- 1 large egg
- 1 Tablespoon heavy cream or milk
- 1/2 Tablespoon parsley chopped
- 1 cup almond flour
- 1 cup parmesan cheese finely grated, fresh is best
- Vegetable oil for frying
Bang Bang Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 Tablespoon chili paste
- 1 Tablespoon keto sweetener
- 1 teaspoon sriracha
- 1 teaspoon lime juice
Instructions
How to Fry Cauliflower:
- Add frying oil to pot so that it is about 1 1/2 inches deep. Place over heat to bring up to temperature (350°F).
- You'll need two small bowls for breading the cauliflower. Add heavy cream and egg to one bowl and whisk together. Add almond flour and parmesan to the second bowl and stir to mix.
- Prep a baking sheet with parchment paper or a non-stick silicone baking mat.
- Cut cauliflower into bite-size pieces. Dip each piece of cauliflower in egg wash until fully coated. Tap to allow excess egg to drip back into bowl.
- Next, roll cauliflower in the breading mixture. Gently press into the coating to ensure that the breading sticks well to the cauliflower. Once coated, place on baking sheet and repeat until all cauliflower is coated.
- Once the oil is to temperature (350°F), place a few pieces of cauliflower into the oil -- take care to ensure they are not touching. Turn as needed until all sides are golden brown.
- Remove the fried cauliflower and place it on a paper towel-lined baking sheet, to absorb excess oil. Continue frying cauliflower in batches.
To Make the Bang Bang Sauce:
- Whisk together sauce ingredients until smooth. For a less spicy sauce, use less sriracha.
- Drizzle bang sauce over the cauliflower bites and enjoy!
