Apple pie and fall go hand in hand! However, most traditional apple pie recipes are packed with sugar and carbs.

These mini apple pies are a different story…each one contains just 4 grams net carbs!

These Keto Apple Hand Pies are the perfect combination of apple pie flavor and a healthy take on an American staple during the fall months. These hand pies taste just like a full-on apple pie, but in a convenient bite-sized version, you can take with you on the go. We used zucchini, which is much lower in carbs than apples, and cooked them so they actually taste just like the sweet fruit. You’d never guess that it’s actually a zucchini based pie filling!

Hand pies have been a popular food for centuries, originally used as a portable food for workers to take with them. They’re often called pasties, pastries, turnovers too. But by any name, these mini apple pies are the perfect handheld treat…and they’re low in carbs!

Keto Apple Hand Pies Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 3 Tablespoon Butter
  • 1 Zucchini (peeled and diced)
  • 1 teaspoon Apple pie spice
  • 3 Tablespoons brown sugar sweetener

For the Dough

  • 1 cup Almond flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • 2 ounces Cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Nutmeg

  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon Xanthan gum
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 2 Tablespoon Melted Butter

Cook Time: 15-20 minutes

Instructions

Be sure to allow yourself 30 minutes of prep time for the dough to chill. This helps the pies keep their shape while baking.

To Make the Dough

  1. Place the cream cheese and mozzarella cheese into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between, until completely melted and combined.
  2. Add the cheese mixture to a mixing bowl with all of the remaining dough ingredients except for the melted butter. Knead until all of the ingredients are combined.
  3. Chill the dough for 30 minutes.

To Make the Filling:

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the zucchini pieces, apple pie spice, and brown sugar sweetener. Cook until the zucchini is crisp on the outside, but still tender inside, stirring frequently.
  3. Allow to cool before assembling pies.

To Prepare the Pies:

  1. Roll the chilled dough out between two pieces of parchment paper to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut the dough into 12 even rectangles. You may need to do this in a couple batches, rolling excess dough into a sheet to cut again.
  2. Scoop about a Tablespoon of the filling into the center of six of dough squares.
  3. Place another rectangle of plain dough over each filled rectangle, and pinch the edges closed. Fold the edges of each pie over on top, to create a crust.
  4. Place the filled pastries on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow cool before serving.

Prep Tips

  • For extra flavor and a golden brown crust, brush the hand pies with melted butter before and after baking.
  • Normally, I keep apple pie at room temperature, in a covered pan. However, since these miniature apple pies are made with cheese and egg, they should be kept refrigerated. They will last for 3-4 days when stored in the fridge. You could put them in a large freezer bag or a food storage container.

  • Chill the dough for 30 minutes.

  • Stir in the zucchini, apple pie spice, and brown sugar sweetener. Cook until the zucchini is crisp on the outside and tender inside. Remove from heat and allow filling to cool to room temperature.
  • Roll the chilled dough out between two pieces of parchment paper until it is about 1/4th inch thick.
  • Cut the dough sheet into 12 evenly sized rectangles. You may have to do this in two batches, rolling the excess back out the second time around.
  • Scoop a heaping Tablespoon of filling into the middle of six of the rectangles of dough.
  • Place another rectangle of plain dough over each filled rectangle, and pinch the edges closed. Fold the edges over to seal.

  • Place the filled pastries on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes at 350°F.
  • Remove and let cool before serving.
