Can You Snack On A Keto Diet?

Yes, you can snack on the keto diet! In fact, snacking can be a helpful way to manage hunger and cravings, as well as prevent overeating at mealtime. Just like regular snacks, you want to keep an eye on portion control – a snack isn’t supposed to be a full meal after all.

There are lots of packaged keto and low carb snacks available at the grocery store, but many have additives like sugar alcohols and things that can cause stomach upset if you’re not careful. It’s always important to read labels. This is also a reason that I make most of my own snacks! When you make your own snacks, you know exactly what goes into your food.

Tips for Keto-Friendly Snacking:

  • Stay in ketosis: Choose snacks with high fat and low net carbs (total carbs minus fiber). Aim for around 5-10g net carbs or less per snack.
  • Manage hunger: Pick snacks that are filling and will keep you feeling you satisfied until your next meal. Snacks rich in good fat will definitely help with this.
  • Variety is key: Don’t get stuck in a rut! Boredom is one of the main reasons people stray from their healthy eating goals. That’s why it’s helpful to have ideas ready to go.

More Quick Keto-Friendly Snack Ideas:

Don’t have time to cook? Here are some quick grab-n-go snacks that work on a low carb diet:

  • Proteins and Fats: Hard-boiled eggs, cheese sticks, meat jerky, sliced deli meats with cheese roll-ups, pork rinds, avocado slices with a sprinkle of spices, olives, celery sticks with almond butter.
  • Fresh Vegetables: Cucumber slices with cream cheese, bell pepper strips with guacamole, broccoli florets with hummus, celery sticks stuffed with cream cheese and chives. Mixing healthy fats with your low carb veggies can keep you feeling full.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds (always be mindful of portion size due to higher carbs).
  • Fats: Olives, coconut oil, MCT oil, cream cheese, guacamole, fatty cuts of meat or fish. These are great things to add to your snacks!
  • Low-Carb Treats: Fat bombs (see some of the recipes above to make ahead and keep in the fridge), chia pudding with unsweetened almond milk and berries, dark chocolate (70% cacao or higher).
